Wear A Fucking Mask

So, we're in the home stretch past this pandemic. We have vaccines. Rates of infection are declining. Death rate is declining. Normal is in sight.

And because of this, you have fucking ignorant legislators pushing for mask mandates to expire as we ENTER the home stretch.

Don't celebrate your victory at the 5 yard line or while the pop fly is still in the air.

Texas lifted its mask mandate and allowed businesses to fully open while less than 10% of its population is fully vaccinated. CDC guidelines state that those who were previously infected should still get vaccinated. Additionally, at least for a short period of time, it's recommended to continue wearing a mask out in public.

Many businesses in Texas are still requiring masks to be worn. But there are people crying foul when told to wear a mask. Texas no longer requires it so businesses can't force people to wear masks anymore, right?

Some years ago there was a case in Colorado where a gay couple wanted to buy a wedding cake from a cake shop. The cake shop declined as it went against their religious beliefs. The gay couple sued for discrimination. The bakery won their lawsuit because the first amendment allows the free exercise of religion and does not permit the establishment of a religion, which basically means the government shouldn't be involved in the affairs of private business when it comes to religion. The Christian Right celebrated this victory.

The Christian Right tends to also be the ones crying foul about wearing masks in businesses.

The interesting thing about law is how things are defined. In this case, neither the Christian nor the gay person is considered a protected class. So by law, there is no discrimination.

So the first thing I'll ask an anti-masker is this: Do you believe that bakery was in the right to deny someone business? The next thing I'll ask: Why do you think the mask requirement is different?

This is an all or nothing deal. If you are not a member of a protected class with a legitimate reason for refusing a mask, you either believe the gay couple should have gotten their wedding cake from the Christian bakery owner, or you believe you should be removed from a store for not wearing a mask. All or nothing.

Many anti-maskers like to point out that you just need to state you have a medical condition because it can't be questioned. It's actually encoded in federal law that, should this be true, the business has even MORE reason to keep you out of their business. This does NOT permit you to enter unimpeded.

But let's run with the medical reasoning real quick: You have a respiratory disease that makes wearing a mask dangerous to you. Given COVID-19 is a respiratory disease as well, if you have a legit problem, why the fuck are you taking a risk? Many of these businesses offer ways you can use them safely if you are unable to protect yourself using a mask. Many grocers have delivery options, or will otherwise shop for you and bring your groceries to your car so you don't have to put yourself at risk of further respiratory disease, injury, or possibly death. If you, legitimately, cannot wear a mask, you should want to AVOID entering a crowded business, especially in fear of anti-maskers, and especially if the business is not enforcing mask requirements.

But, hold on, many people are using this while not having an actual medical condition. In fact, many people with asthma and COPD have come out and stated the mask does not worsen their condition in any way. Abusing the ADA hurts people who have real problems. People with emotional support animals that have seen no service animal training abuse this already, and it actually does make it harder on people with real service animals. Abusing this because of your hurt feelings because you have to put a piece of cloth over your face is just plain childish.

I'm among those with a higher risk with COVID-19 but I'm not yet eligible for the vaccine. I still have to buy groceries, feed my dogs, etc. I wear a fucking mask. And you can too. Stop being petulant children and wear your fucking masks when a business tells you to. Or don't use that business. Just stop being fucking assholes about it and fuck off somewhere else if you can't act like a god damn adult. We're almost done with this shit. Let's keep sprinting to the finish line and come out of this alive, for fuck's sake.

BTW, if a PRIVATE BUSINESS tells you to leave and you do not, that is trespass and you can be taken to jail. It doesn't matter why they tell you to leave. If it's legitimately discriminatory, take it to a courtroom.

Drop+THX Panda Still Has Problems

I just trashed a previous article I wrote but hadn't published. I was prepared to write about the Panda being a failure because, once again, firmware updates to solve its problems were delayed. But...
